Hurricane Sandy Make Up Days
November 14, 2012
Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a result of Hurricane Sandy, the Spotswood School District is required to reschedule four school days prior to the end of the school year.  The Spotswood Board of Education has designated the following as the make up dates for time lost due to the storm:

Monday, January 21
Friday, February 15 - This will be a half-day for students; teachers will use the rest of the day for in-service professional development.
Thursday, April 4
Friday, April 5

Click here for an updated 2012/13 district calendar.

The Board's decision is based on the need for instructional time prior to June to meet curriculum requirements and for state testing and Advanced Placement exam preparation.  Should we need additional days as a result of inclement weather, our plan going forward is to take additional days from spring break (starting with Wednesday, April 3 and moving backward) and then, if necessary, add on to the end of the year.  We will keep you updated should this occur.

We understand that families may have already made vacation plans for some of these days, so we are communicating this information as soon as possible.  Should you be unable to change your plans, please notify your child's teacher(s) as we get closer to these dates so you can arrange for them to make up the work on the days they will miss.

Thank you for your anticipated understanding and cooperation.

Snow Day Make-Ups
February 4, 2011
Dear Parents,

Due to the difficult winter we have been experiencing, as of this date, the Spotswood school district has three snow days to make up before the end of the year.  The Board of Education has decided to reschedule these days as follows:

1.  Friday, February 18 (a scheduled staff in-service day)
2.  Monday, February 21 (President's Day)
3.  Monday, April  25 (Easter Monday)

We have chosen these days due to a concern over lost instruction time for our students.  Part of our curriculum involves preparation for the HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment) in February and NJASK (New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) in May.  If we were to schedule the make up days in June, we would lose valuable preparation time for these tests and put our students at a disadvantage.  We are also concerned that with February and March still in front of us, we must prepare for the possibility of more make-up days ahead.  Should this occur, please be advised that we will consider using additional days during spring break and/or adding days in June.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Donna Faulkenberry, President
on behalf of the Spotswood Board of Education
